The origin of the term 'shiatsu' lie firmly within the roots of traditional oriental medicine. The name comes from the Japanese word 'shi' meaning finger and 'atsu' meaning pressure. It literally means finger pressure. However, the spirit of Shiatsu is one of communication by touch. Shiatsu differs from Westernised forms of massage, which just concentrate on the client’s muscles. Shiatsu stimulates particular points on the body's energy channels in order to effect the body's natural healing energy. Shiatsu is a highly sophisticated form of bodywork.
